time
to defibrillation is the most critical factor in survival of sudden cardiac arrest (sca).
If an aed is "on-site" within two minutes there is an 80% chance that the victim will survive. This is one of the reasons that survival rates improve in areas with active aed programmes. Remember, every minute that passes before defibrillation the survival rate reduces by 7-10 percent. Currently in ireland the survivability rate for out of hospital cardiac arrest is 1%
the provision of automated external defibrillators (aeds) in workplaces to assist in the prevention of sudden cardiac death should be considered. As mentioned in the introduction, early defibrillation using an aed is one of the vital links in the “chain of survival”.
Health and safety legislation sets out the requirements for occupational first aiders. The first aid response course covers all of the occupational first aid requirements for places of work as outlined by the health and safety authority. The number of occupational first aiders will depend on several factors including the size of the undertaking, the numbers employed, the hazards arising, access to medical services, employees working away from their employer’s premises, and workers in isolated locations. Occupational first aiders must have refresher training every two years from the date of the course. Contact the health and safety helpdesk for more information or advice.
Sometimes you may see an additional letter associated with the abcs of first aid. This letter is d. It can mean a few different things:
deadly bleeding. Check to see whether the person has severe bleeding. If you notice that they’re bleeding badly, call 911 or your local emergency services, and apply pressure to the wound until help arrives. Defibrillation. This step involves using an electrical current to restore a normal heartbeat in someone who’s in cardiac arrest.
It’s often done using a device called an automated external defibrillator (aed). Disability. Check for any noticeable injuries or disabilities associated with the person’s current condition.

Contact us first-aid is the provision of initial care for an illness or injury. It is usually performed by a lay person to a sick or injured patient until definitive medical treatment can be accessed. Certain self-limiting illnesses or minor injuries may not require further medical care past the first aid intervention. It generally consists of a series of simple and, in some cases, potentially life-saving techniques that an individual can be trained to perform with minimal equipment. The key aims of first aid can be summarised in three key points (1) preserve life - the overriding aim of all medical care, including first aid, is to save lives.
